This year we are celebrating 100 years of Cubbing worldwide. But, if we really want to know why Cubbing Rocks, who better to ask than the Cubs themselves….
We spoke to Marcus Sphere (10) from St Mary’s Development and Care Center (DCC) Cub Pack in the Eastern Cape.
SSA: Why is Cubbing so much fun?
Cubbing is so much fun because we learn to do stuff we can’t do.
SSA: What was your best experience with Cubs?
The best experience was going swimming and hiking.
SSA: What is the weirdest thing you ate outdoors?
The weirdest thing I ate outdoors was bread, which I think was a bit old. It tasted funny.
SSA: What was the toughest challenge at Cubs?
The toughest challenge at Cubs was climbing on the rock wall at the Monument and going hiking.
SSA: What was the most amazing place you visited with Cubs?
The most amazing place I visited with Cubs was the Featherstone Kloof Valley.
SSA: What things have you done with Cubs to help people in your community?
We had a Cubs Alive Campaign. We made posters with messages that are important for us. We wrote on them ‘don’t force children to smoke’ and ‘respect each other’.
SSA: What have you taught people at home that you learned at Cubs?
I have taught people how to give respect. I also taught them some hiking stuff.
SSA: What makes a good Akela?
A good Akela is a good teacher that teaches us new stuff.
SSA: Why is your Akela special?
My Akela is special because she is always planning something good.
Cubbing Rocks because … we learn such different and many things!
