Today is #EarthDay. A day where people reflect on the state of our planet and what can be done to conserve our environment and mitigate the impact of climate change.
As Scouts, we believe that every day is Earth Day and that it is our duty to act and protect the world we live in through our daily actions and behaviours.
To encourage young people to participate in community service projects and environmental conservation, the World Scout Movement – in partnership with the UN – developed the ‘Better World Framework’. This portfolio includes initiatives such as Scouts for SDGs, the Tide Turners Plastic Challenge and Messengers of Peace.
To simplify the ‘Better World Framework’ programmes, we developed a set of actionable age appropriate requirements for our Meerkats, Cubs, Scouts, Rovers and Adult volunteers. Through these projects our young people adopt positive behaviours and attitudes towards bettering the communities in which they reside, as well as reducing, reusing and recycling waste and single-use plastic.
By leading the way as young people, we believe that Scouting members are being prepared to change the world for the better. To find out more about the Better World Framework and these initiatives go to www.scouts.org.za -> members -> Better World Framework.
Yours in Scouting,
Jeanette Angus,
SSA Coordinator: Better World Framework
