Show we care this Mandela Day!

The 18th of July marks the day on which we give back to others in honour of Madiba. Nelson Mandela was a wise leader, a humanitarian and the Patron of SCOUTS South Africa.

For many years Scouting members have been rallying to show support to local organisations nationwide on Mandela Day. From donating 67 minutes of your time, to gifting food, jars of hope, clothing, pet supplies, and so much more to those in need.

For most of us life is hard, and hope is easily lost. We want to remind people and local charities that there are people out there who care.

Care packages for people & organisations in need

We are calling upon our Scouting members to put together care packages for people or organisations in need of some help.

These could be in the form of:

  • Non-perishable food packages (e.g. tinned food, rice, samp, lentils…)
  • Personal hygiene packages (e.g. soap, shampoo, lotion, face cloths, …)
  • School stationary packages (e.g. pens, pencils, crayons, paper,…)
  • Winter warmer packages (e.g. blankets, socks, beanies, tea/coffee, …)

The size of them is dependent on what you can collect as a Den, Pack, Troop, Group or District.

67 minutes of your time

If  you and/or your members are not able to contribute in kind, you can contribute in time! By giving 67 minutes of service to a local school, a soup kitchen, a church or local charity, you can also show people around you that as Scouts we care about the wellbeing of our communities and the people we share them with.

To give you time to plan your service actions and assemble your care packages, this initiative will run throughout June and end in the week of Mandela Day in July!

We’d love to see & hear about your Good Turns!

Please post your photos online and hashtag #scoutssouthafrica #SSAcares #MandelaDay. You can also send them to pr@scouts.org.za, with your Scout Group name and what you did to show you care.
